Muzaffarnagar, a part of Saharanpur division is a district of Uttar Pradesh with its headquarters located at Muzaffarnagar town. During the period of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, most of its parts were together named as Sarwat. At the time of Sayyid rulers, Sayyid Munawar Lashkar Ali named the city and the district as Muzaffar Nagar in honour of his father, Sayyid Muzaffar Ali Khan. Then the earlier Sarwat also became the part of Muzaffarnagar. In 1901, when there was the British raj, it was a district in the Meerut Division in United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. In those days some prominent freedom fighters were raised in the district are Pt. Sunder Lal, Lala Hardayal, Shri Chandra Muni Tyagi (Vakil), Shri Shanti Narayan, and Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan, the first prime minister of Pakistan, after the partition of British India in 1947.

Vishnu Prabhakar, a renowned Hindi writer who wrote several short stories, novels, plays and travelogues was born on 21th June, 1912 at Miranpur in the district.  His works have the elements of patriotism, nationalism and messages of social up gradation. He was also honoured by the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1993, Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan Award in 1995 and the Padma Bhushan in 2004.

Geographically, the district lies at 29°47'N latitude, 77°71'E longitude and 233 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 1.65% forest area of total geographical area. The district occupies a geographical area of 4,008 sq kms. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 26th in the state and 298th in India. It is bounded by Shamli district on the west and Bijnor district on the east, Saharanpur district on the north and Meerut district on the south. The prominent river that flows though the district is Ganga. The summer season of the district is not very hot. Most of its rainfall occurs during the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1131.7 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 4 tehsils namely Muzaffarnagar, Jansath, Budhana and Khatauli. There are 2 Lok Sabha and 6 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 6 sub-districts, 27 towns and 1,019 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.

According to 2011 the district has a population of 41,43,512 out of which 21,93,434 are males and 19,50,078 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 889 females for every 1000 males. In the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 16.94% including 15.82% were males and 18.22% were females. The population density in the district is 1,034 persons per sq. kms. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 82,826 including 42,268 were males and 40,558 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 16,536 out of which 11,071 were males and 5,465 were females. As per 2011 census the major religions in the district are Hindu and Muslim with 57.51% and 41.30% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Hindi and Urdu with 87.02% and 12.58%.

The district is famous for its huge sugar production. Sugar and jaggery mills contribute in its economy to a great extent. Some other notable industries in the district are steel and paper. Titawi Sugar Mill, Mansoorpur Sugar Mill Ltd, Uper Doab Sugar Mill, Tikola Sugar Mills Ltd, Monet Industries Ltd, Triveni Engineering and Industry Ltd are the important sugar mills in the district. Most of its population are also engaged in agriculture. Sugarcane, wheat, pulses, maize, etc are some chief agricultural crops in the district. In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 27,25,379 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 17,62,221 lakh at Constant Prices during the year 2011-2012. The Net Domestic Product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 24,20,802 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 15,24,584 lakh at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 74,938 at Current Price and Rs. 47,195 at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district has numerous schools and most of these are affiliated to CBSE and UP Board. The district has provides a platform for higher education. Some reputed educational institutes in the district are S.D. College of Management Studies, Bhagwant Institute of Technology, Muzaffarnagar Engineering College, Shri Ram College of Management, Allama Iqbal Unani Medical College, Swami Kalyan Dev Government Ayurvedic College, Muzaffarnagar Medical College, B.M. Law College, Deen Dayal College of Law, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 69.12% including 78.44% are males and 58.69% are females.

Sanjeev Balyan, a distinguished Indian politician and the member of 16th Lok Sabha in which he represents the Muzaffarnagar constituency was born on 23rd June, 1972 at Kutbi in the district. In the NDA Govt, 2014 he has been appointed as minister of state with the portfolio of Agriculture and food processing. He is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party. Munawwar Hasan, an illustrious politician of India and the member of 14th Lok Sabha in which he represents the Muzaffarnagar constituency was born on 15th May, 1964 at Kairana in the district. He was also the member of member of various important committees such as committee on Railways, committee on Transport and Tourism, committee on Agriculture, committee on Labour and committee on members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme. He was a member of Samajwadi Party (political party).

During the year 2021, there were 8,45,680 domestic tourists who visited these places of the district. The district is full of ancient temples and its museum with antique collections allures numerous travellers from across the country. Vahelna, a holy place has a Mosque, a Shiva temple and a Jain temple sharing a common wall. The Vahelna Jain Mandir, also known as Shri 1008 Parshwanath Digamber Jain Atishye Chetra which has an old idol of Lord Parshwanath and the door of the temple is open for people of all religion. Sankirtan Bhawan, or the Kirtan Bhawan in the district has the idol of Lord Tirupati Balaji. People from far distance place come to this place to offer their prayers. Ganeshdham, a pilgrimage with the 35 ft high statue of Lord Ganesh which was installed by Lala Shukhbir Singh and Lala Lakshmi Chand Singhal (two natives of the district). Some other vital centres of attraction in the district are Bhairon ka Mandir, Durga Dham, Kamla Nehru Vatika, Hanumatdham, Zoology Museum, Government Educational Museum, etc.
