About Ahmedabad District (Gujarat)

Ahmedabad district is in the central part of the Gujarat. It is the seventh largest city and seventh most populous district in India. Since the 11th century, the nearby places of Ahmedabad has been inhabited and at that time it was popularly known as ‘Ashaval’. The place was ruled by the Solanki dynasty until the 13th century, when Gujarat was went into the hands of the Vaghela dynasty of Dholka. After sometime in the 14th century Gujarat came under the control of the Delhi Sultanate . Finally, this region was occupied by the Mughal emperor, Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1411 A.D. In the year 1535 when Bahadur Shah, the ruler of Gujarat fled to Diu, Humayun came to Ahmedabad after he won the Champaner. Ahmedabad was then reoccupied by the Muzaffarid dynasty until 1573 when Gujarat was conquered by the Mughal emperor Akbar. During the period of Mughal rule, Ahmedabad was made as one of the Empire's thriving centres of trade, mainly in textiles. Ahmedabad remained as the provincial headquarters of the Mughals until 1758, when they hand over the place to the Marathas. In this way the place of Ahmedabad was ruled by different rulers during different periods of time. After India its independence in 1947, Ahmedabad had become a metropolis with a population of slightly fewer than half a million people by 1960. On 1st May, 1960 after the partition of the state of Bombay, it was selected as the capital of Gujarat. During that period, a large number of educational and research institutions were build up in the city, making it a centre of higher education, science and technology. But in the late 1970s, the capital shifted to the newly built, well planned city of Gandhinagar.

Kumudini Lakhia, an eminent Indian Kathak dancer and choreographer was born in 1930 at Ahmedabad. She was honoured by many great awards-Padma Shri Award by the Government of India in 1987, the Padma Bhushan in 2010, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1982 and Kalidas Samman for the year 2002-2003.

Geographically, the district lies at 23°04'N latitude, 72°57'E longitude and 53 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 1.40% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 8,107 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 8th in the state and 97th in India. It is bounded by Mehsana and Gandhinagar districts on the north, Kheda and Anand Districts on the east, the Gulf of Khambhat (Gulf of Cambay), Botad and Bhavnagar districts on the south, and Surendranagar district on the west. The climate is extremely dry during all the seasons, except the monsoon season. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 600.8 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administrative wise,the district is divided into 10 tehsils-Ahmedabad, Daskroi, Sanand, Bavla, Dholka, Viramgam, Mandal, Rampura, Detroj, Dhandhuka and Bopal. Moreover, the district comprises 13 towns and 512 villages. The administrative language in the district is Gujarati.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 72,14,225 out of which 37,88,051 are males and 34,26,174 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 904 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth of the district was 24.03% including 23.21% were males and 24.95% were females. The population density in the district is 890 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 1,15,701 out of which 61,062 were males and 54,638 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 79,404 out of which 48,277 were males and 31,119 were females.

Ahmedabad was known as the "Manchester of the East" for its textile industry. Ahmedabad is the second largest cotton textile centre in India after Mumbai and the largest in Gujarat. The automobile industries of the district are also contributing in its economy. The Ahmedabad Stock Exchange, located in the Ambavadi area of the city, is India's second oldest stock exchange. The district has two biggest pharmaceutical companies of India-Zydus Cadila and Torrent Pharmaceuticals.

Schools in Ahmedabad are run either by the municipal corporation, or privately by entities, trusts and corporations. The colleges of the district are affiliated with Gujarat University; Gujarat Technological University and other deemed universities. In 1920 the Gujarat Vidyapith was established by Mahatma Gandhi without a charter from the British Raj, which was became a deemed university in 1963. As per 2011 census the literacy rate of the district is 85.31% including 90.74% are males and 79.35% are females.

Ratilal Kalidas Varma, a veteran politician and member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India was born on 30th June, 1948 in Ahmedabad. He represents the Dhanduka constituency of Gujarat. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (Political Party).

The district allures numerous travellers from far distance place every year. The Mosque of Ahmed Shah is located in the south-west end of the famous Bhadra fort. Ahmed Shah's Mosque is a very ancient mosque, built in 1414 AD by the founder of the Ahmedabad city, Ahmed Shah. Bhadrakali Temple of the district is situated inside the famous Bhadra Fort. It is believe that the temple was constructed during the rule of Aazam Khan. The famous Akshardham Temple is located at Gandhi Nagar. The Akshardham Temple is dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan, the father of Swaminarayan Faith. The Victoria Garden is placed at the southern verge of the majestic Bhadra Fort of the Ahmedabad city. Other two enchanting gardens of the district are The Law Garden and Bal Vatika. Chandola Lake is situated on the Dani Dalmi Road which serves as a significant reservoir of Ahmedabad. Kankaria Lake is polygonal in shape with 34 corners; located on the south-eastern outskirts of Ahmedabad. Some of the well-known wildlife sanctuaries of the district are Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden and Rann of Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary. Uttarayan international kite festival and navratri are the two distinguished festivals of the district.
