Kapurthala district is a district of Punjab state with its administrative headquarters located at Kapurthala city. Interestingly, the district has an unique and harmonious blend of the glorious history. The district got its name from its headquarters city, Kapurthala. Rana Kapur, a Rajput belonged to the royal house of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan founded the place, Kapurthala in the 11th century. In the year 1499 the place witnessed a very interesting event was the enlightenment of Guru Nanak. In those days Guru Nanak used to take his bath in the Bein rivulet, located in a little town of Sultanpur Lodhi. Moreover, this is the place from where he had started to sow the seeds of Sikh faith after receiving the grace. Guru Nanak sahib spent 14 years of his life in this place, meditated under the Ber tree (which believe that still exists) and started his journey from here to various other parts of the world in order to spread the message of oneness. The beautiful historical monuments in the district depict its outstanding royalty. Prior to the India’s independence, Kapurthala was a part of the capital of Kapurthala State, a princely state. The district came into existence on 15th July, 1998.

Gaganjeet Singh Bhullar, an eminent Indian professional golfer who plays on the Asian Tour was born on 27th April, 1988 at Kapurthala city. In the year 2013, the Government of India honoured him by the prestigious Arjuna Award.

Geographically, the district lies at 31°41' N latitude, 75°40' E longitude and 300 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 0.61% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 1,633 sq km. and it is bounded by Amritsar district, Gurdaspur district and Hoshiarpur district on the North, Jalandhar district on the South and South East and Firozpur district on the South West. The climate of the district is characterised as sub-tropical continental monsoon type climate. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1367.7 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 tehsils namely Kapurthala, Phagwara, and Sultanpur Lodhi. There are 2 Lok Sabha and 4 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 4 sub-districts, 9 towns and 612 villages. The administrative language in the district is Punjabi.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 8,15,168 out of which 4,26,311 are males and 3,88,857 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 912 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 8.04% including 6.68% were males and 9.57% were females. The population density in the district is 499 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 10,199 out of which 5,317 were males and 4,882 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 6,320 out of which 3,649 were males and 2,671 were females. As per 2011 census the major religions in the district are Sikh and Hindu with 55.66% and 41.23% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Punjabi with 91.20%.

Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. Most of the lands in the district are use for agricultural purposes. More than half of its population are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are wheat, rice, sugarcane, potato, maize, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. In the industrial sector also the district is quite well developed. The district is fortunate enough to have the two most prominent industries likewise JCT Mills, located at Phagwara in the Kapurthala district is one of the most successful textile mills in India and SSK industries of the district, established in 1935 is one of the India's oldest and biggest manufacturers of Electrical wiring accessories. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from the industrial sector helps in its economy to a great extent. In the year 2019-20 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 16,16,193 lakhs at current price and Rs. 12,43,957 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 14,52,979 lakhs at current price and Rs. 11,15,432 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 1,67,009 at current price and Rs. 1,28,211 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district is an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its recognised educational institutions are NJSA Government College, Hindu Kanya College for Women, Sainik School, Anand Public Senior Secondary School, Prita Lee Lesson Senior Secondary School, Kapurthala Public High School, Bawa Lalvani Public School, MGN Public School, Little Angels Co-Ed School, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Christ King Convent School, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 79.07% out of which 83.15% are males and 74.63% are females.

During the year 2018, there were 26,817 domestic tourists and 3,208 foreign tourists who visited the district. The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well world. Jagatjit Palace transformed to the Sainik School at present was once the palace of HRH Maharajah Jagatjit Singh, the earlier Maharajah of Kapurthala state. The palace building encompasses a total area of 200 acres. Elysee Palace, located in the district was constructed by Kanwar Bikrama Singh in 1862. But at present the wonderful building has been changed into a notable school of the district named MGN School. Moorish Mosque, a renowned creation of Maharajah Jagatjit Singh, the last ruler of Kapurthala which design is based on the replica of the Grand Mosque of Marakesh, Morocco. Moreover, it took a long time period of 13 years to complete i.e. between 1917 and 1930. Panch Mandir, a place of worship was built during the period of Sardar Fateh Singh. There are total five temples within the temple complex and an amazing feature of this temple is that pilgrims can easily view all the five idols of the five temples from the entry door of the temple complex. Some of its other well known places of interest are Jagatjit Club, Shalimar Gardens, State Gurudwara, Brahmkund Temple, Gurudwara Ber Sahib, Kanjli Wetlands, etc.
