Washim district is in Maharashtra and its headquarter located at Washim. This district is located in the eastern region of Vidharbha. An interesting story is associated with the name of the district. Earlier, Washim was popularly known as Vatsagulma when it was the seat of power of the Vakataka dynasty. It is believe that the second son of Pravarsena I named Sarvasena was the founder of Vatsagulma or present place of Washim. In the Ain-i-Akbari, the description of Berar was added to it in the year 1596-97. At that time a huge part of the present day’s Akola district was enclosed in the empire of Akbar, but some of its parganas of that period are currently included in Buldhana, whereas, the today’s Akola district includes the three parganas of Akbar's revenue district of Bashim. In the year 1905, during the period of the British Raj, Washim district was bifurcated into two separate districts, namely Akola and Yavatmal districts. Finally, the district was formed in the year 1997.

The district encompasses a geographical area of 4,898 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 33rd in the state and 233th in India. Washim District lies at 20°10'N latitude, 77°15'E longitude and 549 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 6.05% forest area of total geographical area. The district is enclosed by Akola on the north, Amravati on the northeast, Hingoli on the south, Buldhana on the west, Yavatmal on the east. The prominent river that flows through the district is Penganga river. The actual rainfall in the district was 1162.3 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administratively, the district is divided into 6 sub-districts, 4 towns and 698 villages. There are 3 Vidhan Sabha constituencies in this district likewise Karanja, Risod and Washim. While Risod is part of Akola Lok Sabha constituency, Karanja and Washim are part of Yavatmal-Washim Lok Sabha constituency. The administrative language in the district is Marathi.

As per 2011 census, the district has a population of 11,97,160 with 6,20,302 are males and 5,76,858 are females. The sex ratio of this district was 930 females per 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011, the population growth rate in the district was 17.34% including 17.91% were males and 16.74% were females. The population density in the district is 244 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 16,355 out of which 8,304 were males and 8,051 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 7,381 out of which 4,165 were males and 3,215 were females. As per 2011 census the major religions in the district are Hindu and Muslim with 71.83% and 11.92%. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Marathi and Hindi with 75.88% and 14.48%.

The economy of the district depends upon agriculture. Cotton is the most important cash crop with the largest area under cultivation, followed by sorghum. Washim taluka has the largest area under cotton cultivation. It is the largest producer of sorghum along with Malegaon and Mangarulpir. Risod, Washim and Manora talukas are also wheat producers. The area under cultivation of sugarcane is also growing in the district. The district being a producer of cotton, industrial activity is largely cotton-based, like the handloom industry which dates back to ancient times. In Mangarulpir, the cloth industry uses hand spun thread to make khadi. The only sugar factory in the district, Shri Balaji Cooperative Sugar Factory, is situated at Masalpen in Risod. There is a chemical fertilizer factory in Washim. Dhanaj in Karanja has a domestic LPG gas filling unit. Almost every taluka in the district has ginning-pressing mills. Other industries include leather-goods, toys and other products from wood, nylon rope, silk thread production, dal mills and oil mills. Washim Growth Center is one of the best industrial parks in the Washim district, and has been set up with the main objective to promote industrial growth in the region. In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 13,79,600 lakhs at current price and Rs. 11,00,900 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 12,37,100 lakh at current price and Rs. 9,86,000 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 96,520 at current price and Rs. 76,930 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district is an abode of several reputed educational institutions that provides quality higher education. There are some recognised educational institutions in the district, namely Government Polytechnic, Adarsh Adhyapak Mahavidyalaya, Advocate Ramakrishnaji Rathi Law College, Late Chhabhutai Dahake College of Education, Maa Ganga Nursing School, Manasi Nursing College, Reynolds Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Sanmati Law College. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 83.25% out of which 90.55% are males and 75.48% are females.

Bhavana Gawali, born in 1973, is a Shiv Sena member of parliament representing Yavatmal-Washim, Maharashtra in the 16th Lok Sabha. She has served as MP for this constituency since 2009. She was also a member of the 13th Lok Sabha and 14th Lok Sabha representing the former Washim constituency.

The district is visited by tourists from all over India due to its well-known pilgrimage sites. Venkateshwara Balaji Temple is an important pilgrimage of Washim district. The temple of was constructed in 1779 AD by Bhavani Kalu who rose to be the Diwan of Sabji Bhosle and Janoji Bhosle. It took 12 years to build the large paved quadrangle structure of the temple and the veranda. It is believed that Tirupati’s Lord Balaji comes here for resting after the harvest. A big Fair is held in honour of Balaji in Ashvina month. Pohara Devi temple at Manora is an important pilgrimage of Banjara community in Maharashtra. Karanja is birth place of Shri Nrusimha Saraswati Gurumaharaj who is believed to be second avatar of Lord Datta. Over the past 70 years, Gurumandir of Karanja has become a place for religious and social welfare activities in the Vidharabha region. Padmatirtha is one of the holy 108 tirthas of Lord Vishnu. The temple is situated in the northern quarters of Washim. The temple is at the centre of the kund where devotes takes bath. Chamunda Devi Temple is one of the important Hindu temple and many devotees visit the temple daily for blessing. Shri Nath Nange Maharaj Temple in Malegaon of the Washim district is built of white marble and the main shrine is also beautiful. Daridrya Harana Tirtha is a water tank which is believed to have created by Shri Dattatreya. It is also believed that it is the same place where King Dashratha of Ayodhya, the father of Lord Rama, killed Shravana by mistake as per Ramayana epic. Ram Mandir is the main shrine of Lord Rama with other shrines of Sita, Maruti, Rariha Krishna. Bhagvandas Maharaj Bairagi built this temple 250 years ago. Ramnavami is the main festival of the temple in the month of Chaitra.
